Memorial Weekend

So, what kind of person has a fantastic, fun filled weekend and doesn't take a single picture?

That would be ME!

We had a crazy weekend. And I guess in all that craziness, I didn't think of the camera once. Okay, I thought about it briefly when I stuck the batteries in the charger, then proceeded to completely erase any thought of cameras from my mind.

Oops.

That's okay, I will tell you about it anyway.

Our holiday weekend was centered around the big backyard BBQ we had on Sunday. All last week, after Mia went to bed, we spent our evenings working outside, weeding, planting, cleaning, and anything else that needed done in preparation for our big shindig. There is nothing that motivates more than having a bunch of people over. We now have great tans, but sore muscles and a couple of bruises here and there. But it was well worth it. The place looked great and the party was a blast.

Friends and neighbors converged on the Schnelle house on Sunday afternoon for what turned out to be a very hot, humid, but perfect BBQ day. We ended up having about 15 adults and 9 children. To me, that is the perfect size. Not to many, not too few. I like to be able to spend time with everyone, and too many people makes it difficult. Then I spend the next few days feeling guilty about how I didn't get to talk to this one or that one. I don't know what it is about kids, but I LOVE it when there are lots of kids around playing and having a good time. Gives me warm fuzzies. Unfortunately, Mia came down with a fever the night before and spent most of the day napping so she missed out on most of the fun. Today, I found out that she has Roseola - poor bugger.

Anyway, we had a great time celebrating the holiday. The rain that was forecast held off and it remained sunny and hot. Turned out to be a beautiful evening to hang out on the porch. We have been really blessed to have great neighbors and meet wonderful people in the four years we have been here. It was great to have them all together and enjoy the day.

With all the hard labor and partying, Monday was spent recovering. I ended up coming down with a crazy cold, and Gabe was suffering from a bit of Beersheimers. However, we always take the time to reflect about the true reason for celebrating Memorial Day, which is to remember those who have served our country. My Grandfather, Father and Uncles all proudly served in the armed forces. My grandfather especially saw the trials of war, having been in the thick of WWII. Thankfully, all returned home safely. But on Memorial Day our thoughts turn to those who were not so lucky, but have given their lives for our right to live free in this wonderful country we live in.

We salute you.
