Boston is a GREAT town! I was there for a 6 day work trip for the American Society of Microbiologists tradeshow. It was a long and exhausting week. We flew in Saturday. All day trip with a long layover in Charlotte (yuk) with the same story back on Thursday. We were on the go non-stop between setting up the booth, working the booth, group dinners, more booth duty and tear-down. But, I was able to get an afternoon and take a quick bus tour of the city. As whirlwind as it was, I was able to capture a few cool pics of some key places. Thank goodness I have an awesome camera that can capture a decent photo moving at 20mph!
First, a pic of our booth.....pretty snazzy...

A view of Boston Harbour from dinner on Monday night

Not sure what church this is, but it's old and gorgeous. One of a few historical churches in the area.

The old State House. The first reading of the Declaration of Independence to Bostonians happened here from the balcony.

Cheers! (or at least the exterior shot from the show) The inside isn't really the Cheers bar.

And you can't leave Boston without seeing Fenway. Gotta bring Gabe back for a game here.

I couldn't resist taking this pic of the famed Boston Fire Dept.

What a great town. Reminded me a lot of Europe. We did a couple of other cool things like eating dinner at the oldest restaurant in the US - Ye old Union Oyster House (est. 1826), experiencing The North End and Little Italy (by far the best cannoli I have ever had) and partaking in some local fare such as baked scrod (scrawd) and clam chowder (chowda). But as great of a time as we had, I was very happy to get back home. Six days on a business trip isn't my cup of tea, and Gabe liked it even less. I hope to get back to Boston in the near future with Gabe. The history buff in me just didn't get enough and I know Gabe would love to see a game at Fenway (if we can get tickets before 2015)
On a whole other note.... we performed another animal rescue today. Maybe we need to start a show on Animal Planet! Animal Rescue Midwest Style....
A co-worker of mine discovered a very large snapping turtle stuck in his window well. He wasn't sure what to do with it, so I helped him out by taking it off his hands. I figured it might like our pond. Of course, that was before we found out it was a snapping turtle! But, we took him anyway. I don't expect him to stick around long. Turtles tend to wander a lot. And hopefully the animals are smart enough to stay out of his way!
It was a fun ride home with him. About half way home, he started to get pretty restless and starting trying to climb out of the bin. EEEEK!! Its hard to drive when you have a snapping turtle trying to run around in your car! So I had to pull over and put him in the trunk. HA! What a life! :) Anyway, got a nice pic of him and a video is his release back into the wild.
He measured about a foot in length and about 6-8 inches across. Not nearly as cute as a regular turtle He had a lot of spikes.

And freedom!...

Hi Alli-
Nice pictures of bean town. Tell Gabe I feel for him being abandoned for 6 whole days. Remel likes Alli methinks.
Snapping turtle, ugh. Did it head for the pond ar stay contrary? Seems to me you just take it out of the window well and let it wander off? "no I'm not going to poke it, HaHa. I'm suprized Cooky wasn't in the midddle of the release procedure.
Sounds like your Mom and Maxie are having a good time in TX. Have you heard about the necklace? The "extra king pay" is under attack an bleeding.:-)
Went to a get together at Jan & Noel's on Thursday to celebrate their son (Sterling's) graduation as an ME. The good part is he was accepted to Columbia and will get a masters in Construction Management. I got to know him 4 or 5 years ago and my habit is to take a case of my brew over for his enjoyment when he visits. I got home about 0130, not bad for me and in not to bad of shape. Hydration, hydration, hydration.
Let me look at my counter......177 days! YAY.
John
Wow! That's pretty awesome...besides the possibility of snapping a finger off, he's actually pretty darn cute! :)
p.s. Thanks for the link, girl! :)
Hi Alli-
I am overloaded here with estimates so since I reply at work I don't get to sit and think about what happenned this WE before I write it. It was quiet except for the standard Wed after work get together at Jim's. I called Ken H and guilted him so he showed up also. Ask you Mom who they are.
I am busily drilling into the headhunters and prospective employer websites. I think it will be hard to find a firm commitment until I get back but we will see. My old employer Fluor Daniel is doing great and I can always get a job there. The downside is they are in Sugarland TX and that is 56 miles from the woodlands. That would be my last choice. I haven't looked in Denver to much but will eventually.
Hurt myself at Jim's on Wed but still on the wagon during F to Wed. I have found other ways to pack in the calories though don't worry:-). Did I say that I am back on real coke?
Sept 1st is our tentative leave date. You Mom will have to cut her V short some. How much is up to her. I always look at things like NBD and she gets after me about that, HaHa.
Had an EEG this AM, almost went to sleep.
Love
John
Hi Alli-
No excuses for not blogging just because you are on vacation. Say hello to Phil and Gretchen. What is this siblings visiting each othe????? TV shows make you think they are always pissed off at each other or some other aberrant? thing.
Jill just told me that Cindy was or is having some pains in her left leg and arm. Worries me.
My weekend was very quiet. I actually took some oictures of the honey bees attacking the day lilys in that are blooming around the trees in the front yard. Of course I didn't bring them so I can't send til I get home.
The dust is finally down today after 30 days of almost continuous wind and dust and sand in the air.
Talk at you next week.
John
Was 163 now 72 days. 9 days til I give my notice, yay.
Hi Alli – I finally logged onto you blog. I haven’t been very good about keeping up with things lately. WOW I think Boston will be on our list of places to see once we retire and do a little traveling around the U.S. There’s a lot we haven’t explored in our own country.
That turtle looks so non threatening, goes to show you can’t tell a book by its cover (bumper sticker? :-))
Love MOM
